Outlander PHEV to go on sale in USA in May, finally!

After multiple delays, Mitsubishi Motors says the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle is scheduled to go on sale in the U.S. in May 2016.

Originally set to go on sale in North America in January 2014, Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV production was delayed multiple times because of battery fire issues, then battery supply issues, and then lack of commitment to the North American market simply because the SUV was selling like hot-cakes all over Europe. Back in May of this year, Mitubishi Motors North America executive vice president Don Swearingen confirmed the Outlander PHEV would be coming to the USA in the first quarter of 2016.

The plug-in electric Outlander uses a gasoline engine and two electric motors to provide all-wheel-drive and up to 30 miles of all electric travel. Other than a unique dashboard and instrument cluster and a charging port, it looks very much the same as the gasoline powered Outlander.

Following the Outlander PHEV, likely in 2017, Mitsubishi says they will bring a smaller Outlander Sport Plug-in (called the ASX in some countries) to market, although it remains unclear if the Sport PHEV will arrive in North American showrooms.

Later, in 2018 or beyond, Mitsubishi is planning to bring back the rugged Montero SUV that was pulled from the U.S. in 2006. It will go on sale with a variety of plug-in hybrid and gasoline powertrains.

  1. The 5 passenger capacity kills it for me. If it had the 7 passenger capacity of the gas version, this would be a must-buy.
