Volkswagen announces Atlas 7-seat SUV with plug-in hybrid version likely

This weekend Volkswagen announced their new 7 passenger Atlas SUV. It’s the largest SUV Volkswagen has made and is specifically targeting the U.S. market. The plan is to build it in Chattanooga, Tennessee, alongside the Passat.

The Atlas is significantly larger than the Gold, but both vehicles are built on the same MQB architecture.

Volkswagen hasn’t made any mention of a plug-in hybrid version of the Atlas, but it’s definitely assumed because (a) the Atlas is loosely based off of the plug-in hybrid CrossBlue concept vehicle and (b) Volkswagen has recently said all future models will  have a plug-in offering.

The 2018 Atlas will enter the U.S. market in Spring 2017, and we expect the plug-in hybrid Atlas to arrive shortly after that.
