Smart ForTwo Electric Drive sales predicted for 2013

When talking annual sales of an electric vehicle, it can be risky to give specific numbers as Nissan and Chevy have learned. So instead, Smart took to giving predictions, but vague predictions.

Smart Managing Director Annette Winkler has stated that “demand is strong” and Smart expects its total global sales to be in the “very good four-digit” range for 2013. Another Smart spokeperson provides more details by telling Automotive New Europe that the Smart Electric Drive is expected to account for around 10% of Smart’s total sales in 2013. In 2012, Smart sold just over 100,000 ForTwos around the world which could put the total sales for the Smart ForTwo Electric Drive vehicle somewhere around the 10,000 mark for 2013.

Some are thinking that number may seem low considering the Smart ED will be the cheapest electric vehicle on the market at only $25,000 before subsidies, but Smart’s rollout plan is only partially complete.

Smart began production of the Electric Drive in June of 2012, and the electric vehicle is currently only available in Germany, Belgium, France, Switzerland, Italy and Portugal. The US gets the EV in the spring of 2013 and 30 additional markets will supposedly be added at a later date.
