Rav4 EV launch will be limited to California, more details May 7th

Yesterday Toyota released the most boring tease photo yet – it’s a close up of the electric badging that will appear on the Toyota Rav4 EV. Aside from the tease photo, there probably won’t be anything boring about the launch of the Rav4 EV when Toyota reveals details about it next week. On May 7th, in the middle of the International Electric Vehicle Symposium in LA that runs May 6th to 9th, Toyota will debut the all new Rav4 EV.

The Rav4 EV was first shown at the 2012 LA Auto show and had a then-estimated range of 100 miles. Toyota plans to build the Rav4 EV at the Toyota plant in Woodstock, Ontario Canada.

According to Toyota officials, the limited launch of the Toyota Rav4 EV doesn’t mean that Toyota isn’t serious about electric vehicles. Toyota isn’t basing future EV plans on the success of the Rav4 EV. Bob Carter, group vice president and general manager for Toyota Motor Sales USA says that Toyota has other EV plans for after the Rav4 EV.

Toyota’s corporate philosophy so far has been that electric vehicles have a long way to go and are not as near-term a solution as hybrid electric vehicles.

Until now, the only details we’ve had of the Toyota Rav4 EV have been based off of the very limited lease-only production of the Rav4 EV from back in 2007 (pictures below).
