Fiat 500e range announced

We admit, we’re a little behind (2 weeks or so) on this. Somewhere in the excitement of coming out of the holidays and leading up to the North American International Auto Show on January 14th, we missed an announcement by Fiat.

On January 4th, Fiat announced the 2013 Fiat 500e will go on sale in California in the second quarter of 2013.

As for electric range, the 500e is rated at 87 miles! That beats the Honda Fit EV, Smart ED, Mitsubishi i MiEV and Nissan Leaf electric vehicles.

The EPA rates the Fiat 500e as getting 122MPGe in the city and 108 MPGe on the highway. The official EPA fuel consumption rate is 29 kWh per 100 miles thanks to an efficient 111-hp electric motor.

The Fiat 500e lithium-ion battery pack holds 24 kWh and will charge in less than 4 hours on a 240-watt Level 2 charger.

Still no word on price, but Fiat has said it will lose $10,000 for each EV it sells on a vehicle that’s “three times higher” than the gas powered Fiat 500 which puts it somewhere around the $40,000 mark. That was back in 2011, and the market has changed. If the 2013 Fiat 500e really does cost $40,000 plus, I don’t think they’ll sell any.
