Toyota Rav4EV priced under $50,000

Today at the 26th annual Electric Vehicle Symposium in LA Toyota released details and photos of the 2012 Toyota Rav4 EV.

Toyota says the Rav4 EV all electric range is 100 miles. The battery pack will charge from empty in 6 horus on a 240V 40 amp charger. The new Rav4 EV has LED and halogen headlights as well as special ‘environmental blue’ color emblems on the outside. The Toyota Rav4 EV will be build in Woodstock Ontario by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada, Inc.

The battery and powertrain in the 2012 Toyota Rav4 EV was designed by Tesla. Unfortunately it seems like Toyota is only  releasing this to meet compliance of new regulations in the State of California. The Rav4 EV will go on sale in late summer 2012, but it will be available for lease only, and will only be available in California – initially in 4 major markets including Sacramento, San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego. Toyota hope to sell 2600 units per year, further enforcing that Toyota is using this vehicle to meet the bare minimum requirements set by government regulations on vehicle emissions.

The MSRP for a fully equipped Toyota Rav4 EV is $49,800.
