Plug-in hybrid BMW 3 series launching this summer

A plug-in hybrid version of the BMW 3 series is undergoing winter cold weather testing ahead of launching later this summer.

The new model is expected to use the 4 cylinder drive train featured in the BMW X5 eDrive concept. If so, the 3-series will use a 4 cylinder turbocharged engine along with a 95 horsepower electric motor.

Based on the X5 eDrive specifications, the lighter 3-series plug-in hybrid will likely have an electric range of 25 miles at speeds up to 75 mph.

If the 3-series plug-in hybrid does make it to market this summer, it will only be shortly behind the July launch of the BMW i8.
