Volkswagen E-Up! priced from €26,900 ($34,500 USD) which makes it almost triple the price of the gasoline powered Up! For those following the E-Up!, most were expecting the price to be around €16000.
Along with the price, Volkswagen released these specs:
- 0-62 mph (0 to 100 km / h) in 12.4 seconds
- top speed of 80 mph (130 km / h)
- 18.7 kWh lithium-ion battery
- optional charger system (CCS Combined Charging System) – up to 40 kW, giving full charge in 30 minutes
The E-Up! is a compact 4 seat electric vehicle that weighs in at 2600lbs. It is rated as having a 160km range on the NEDC testing system. To compare, the 2013 Nissan Leaf, which costs about €1000 less than the E-Up! and has space for a 5th passenger, is rated at 200 km on the NEDC test cycle. That would make the range on the EPA test somewhere around 60 miles for the little Volkswagen.
The VW E-Up! is set to debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show in September.
With the high price and the low range, the E-up! isn’t likely to do very well, and doesn’t seem like Volkswagen really wanted to be in the electric vehicle market. Luckily, VW has no plans of bringing the E-Up! to North America.
