Renault Revives a 70s Icon with a Bold Electric Twist!

Renault is keeping the retro vibe alive, this time reviving the iconic 1970s Renault 17 with an electrifying twist. In collaboration with French designer Ora Ïto, Renault has transformed the classic fastback coupe into a modern, battery-powered machine.

The R17 Electric Restomod is not just a tribute to the past, but a bold leap into the future of automotive design.

A Modern Classic

The original Renault 17 was a standout coupe, with over 92,000 units sold between 1971 and 1979. The new R17 restomod takes the soul of that vintage ride and upgrades it for the electric era.

Renault kept several key elements from the original, including the monocoque structure, doors, and windows, while stretching the body by 6.7 inches and widening the stance to give it a more assertive look.

With a carbon-fiber chassis and a new electric powertrain, the R17 Restomod is ready to turn heads once again. The rear-mounted motor pumps out 270 horsepower, a serious boost over the original’s modest four-cylinder engine.

Renault hasn’t released performance figures yet, but with only 3086 pounds to move, this sleek EV promises a thrilling drive.

Design: Where Retro Meets Futuristic

Visually, the R17 Restomod takes inspiration from the original but amps it up with modern flair. The front of the car ditches the classic circular headlights for sharper, rectangular units, adding a more aggressive edge to its face.

The rear taillight is a single LED strip spanning the width of the car, bringing a sleek, minimalist touch to the design.

The exterior paint job is a custom Galactic Brown, developed just for this project. The wheels, reminiscent of vinyl records, fit perfectly beneath the new squared-off arches, giving the car a muscular stance while paying homage to its 1970s roots.

A Futuristic Interior with Retro Charm

Step inside, and the R17’s cabin is where the future truly shines. The restomod keeps the old-school charm with a squarish steering wheel, but adds four digital screens behind it, mimicking the original gauge layout.

A center infotainment screen sits discreetly beneath the dashboard, blending high-tech functionality with the car’s vintage aesthetic.

The seats are reimagined with a combination of brown Merino wool and beige wool bouclé fabric, offering both comfort and a nod to the past.

Renault has struck a balance between retro charm and futuristic tech, making the cabin a perfect mix of style and innovation.

Renault’s Electric Future

While the R17 Electric Restomod won’t be hitting production lines anytime soon, it’s clear that Renault is continuing to mine its past for inspiration as it moves into an electric future.

The company’s retro restomods, from the R5 to the R17, show that looking back can be a great way to move forward. Though this one-off creation won’t be available for purchase, it’s an exciting glimpse into how Renault is blending heritage with cutting-edge technology.

Renault’s love for its history, combined with its commitment to electric innovation, ensures that this won’t be the last time we see a beloved classic reborn for the modern era.

Whether or not this electric R17 hits the streets, its design and performance are a clear sign that Renault is committed to keeping the fun and creativity alive in the EV world.
