Mazda (MZDAY) has officially opened up pre-orders for its brand-new Mazda EZ-6 EV and EREV models in China, bringing affordability to the electric vehicle market with a starting price that’s hard to beat—just under $25,000.
Co-developed with Changan Auto, the EZ-6 is Mazda’s latest addition to the electric lineup, offering sleek styling, impressive tech, and enough versatility to appeal to a broad range of buyers.
The EZ-6 was initially showcased earlier this year alongside another new Mazda offering, but this model is now confirmed for production, with sales starting later this year.
While some sources have differing views on the exact pricing, it seems pretty clear that the base price is set around 160,000 yuan (about $22,800), making it a strong contender for anyone eyeing a budget-friendly EV.
Powertrain Choices: EV or EREV?
The Mazda EZ-6 is available in both fully electric (BEV) and extended-range electric (EREV) versions. The EV options include a single electric motor generating 190 kW (254 hp) paired with a choice of two battery packs: a 56.1 kWh or a 68.8 kWh option.
Depending on the configuration, this allows for an impressive range of either 480 km or 600 km (roughly 370 miles) on a single charge. Top speed is electronically capped at 170 km/h (105 mph), which should suit most drivers.
For those looking for an extended range without full EV reliance, the EREV version might be the ideal middle ground. The EREV model combines a 93-hp 1.5L gasoline engine, acting solely as a generator, with a 160 kW electric motor.
It offers up to 1301 km (about 808 miles) in comprehensive range, thanks to its lithium iron phosphate battery, with an electric-only range of about 80 miles before the gasoline engine kicks in.
Interior Tech and Comfort
Despite its affordable price, Mazda hasn’t skimped on tech and luxury in the EZ-6. Even the base model comes equipped with leather seating, while higher trims feature a combination of leather and suede.
The cabin is outfitted with a 14-speaker Sony audio system, customizable 64-color ambient lighting, and front “zero-gravity” seats that recline nearly flat for those long road trips. A panoramic glass roof and a 14.6-inch infotainment screen are just a few of the features that make this car feel far more premium than its price tag suggests.
The EZ-6 also brings in some futuristic elements, such as a 50-inch augmented reality heads-up display (HUD), giving drivers essential information right in their line of sight. Mazda’s use of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 chipset powers the car’s cockpit systems, making for a smooth and responsive driving experience.
Style and Aerodynamics
Mazda has always been known for its sleek, sporty designs, and the EZ-6 is no different. From its coupe-like profile to its aggressive LED lighting, this EV stands out on the road.
It’s fitted with what Mazda calls “Wings of Light” LED headlights, a feature that not only looks sharp but also enhances nighttime visibility. At higher speeds, an electrically actuated rear spoiler deploys to improve stability and aerodynamics.
On the size front, the Mazda EZ-6 sits in a sweet spot. Measuring 4921 mm in length and 1890 mm in width, it’s slightly larger than some of its competitors while maintaining a sporty and compact feel. Its wheelbase of 2895 mm ensures a comfortable ride for both the driver and passengers.
Charging Speeds and Driving Assistance
In terms of charging, Mazda keeps things convenient. The EV model can charge from 30% to 80% in just 15 minutes when connected to a fast charger. The EREV variant takes slightly longer at 20 minutes for a similar charge. Whether you’re opting for the full EV or the extended-range model, you won’t be spending too much time at the charger.
While the EZ-6 includes Level 2.5 driving assistance, this seems to be a glorified cruise control system rather than fully autonomous driving. Still, it adds a layer of convenience for highway cruising and long commutes.
What’s Next?
The Mazda EZ-6 is an intriguing addition to the ever-growing electric vehicle market, especially with its competitive pricing and solid range of features.
Mazda has clearly put a lot of thought into combining practicality with a touch of luxury, making the EZ-6 an attractive option for those looking to jump into the EV world without breaking the bank. The fact that the car offers both fully electric and extended-range options adds versatility that many buyers will appreciate.
With pre-orders now live, it’ll be interesting to see how this affordable EV performs as it heads towards official release later this year.
If you’re in China and looking for an EV that balances tech, comfort, and affordability, the Mazda EZ-6 might just be your next ride. And with prices starting below $25,000, it’s certainly one to watch.
Still has a “grille” like many others for those who just can’t let go. A case of radiator envy?
