Inside Nio’s ET9: The EV That Feels Like a Private Jet

At Nio Day 2024 in Guangzhou, Nio (NIO) unveiled its latest flagship sedan, the ET9, a car that aims to redefine the executive EV market.

With cutting-edge technology, opulent design, and a business-class experience for passengers, the ET9 is more than just a—it’s a statement. Let’s break down what makes this luxury EV tick.

Dimensions That Make a Statement

The ET9 is Nio’s largest car to date, blurring the line between sedan and SUV coupe. At 5324 mm long, 2016 mm wide, and 1620 mm tall, it offers an imposing yet sleek silhouette.

With a wheelbase of 3250 mm, it maximizes interior space, but its size necessitates third-generation battery swap stations. Older stations? Not compatible—this sedan is strictly forward-looking.

900V High-Voltage Platform: Speed Meets Efficiency

The ET9 debuts Nio’s Thunder electric drive system, supported by a 900V architecture, offering blistering charging speeds. Its 120 kWh battery can add a 255 km range in just 5 minutes on a 600 kW fast charger. With a CLTC range of up to 650 km, it pairs long-distance capability with the convenience of rapid refueling.

Performance That Delivers

Power comes from a dual-motor setup:

  • 180 kW front asynchronous motor
  • 340 kW rear permanent magnet synchronous motor

Together, they generate 520 kW of power and 700 Nm of torque, propelling the ET9 from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds. Despite its size, the rear-wheel steering ensures a tight 10.9-meter turning radius for nimble handling.

Inside: Business-Class Redefined

The interior of the ET9 feels more private jet than passenger car. Designed as a four-seater, it boasts Nio’s new Sky Island panoramic roof, creating an airy, open atmosphere. Rear passengers enjoy 22-way adjustable seats, a reclining boss seat with a 135° angle, and luxury features like a 10-liter fridge and touchless door entry.

For entertainment, there’s the Nio LYRA 8.2.4.8 sound system, packing 35 speakers and 2800W of power, paired with an AR HUD capable of projecting a 120-inch display at 15 meters.

Next-Gen Tech: SkyRide and Steer-By-Wire

The ET9 introduces the SkyRide intelligent chassis system, offering 1,000 torque adjustments per second via a fully active suspension. This isn’t just smooth—it’s a game-changer. From everyday commutes to dynamic driving modes, the ET9 adapts seamlessly.

Adding to its futuristic vibe is the steer-by-wire system, which eliminates any mechanical connection between the steering wheel and wheels. This tech—borrowed from aviation—enhances precision and opens the door to future over-the-air upgrades.

Safety and Autonomy at the Forefront

Equipped with 31 sensors, including 3 LiDAR units and 4D millimeter-wave radar, the ET9 targets autonomous driving that’s 20 times safer than human operation. Nio’s Shenji NX9031 chips, with computing power far exceeding its predecessors, ensure sharp image processing and reliable performance in low-light conditions.

When it comes to passenger safety, the ET9 doesn’t skimp. With nine airbags, a body strength of 2,000 MPa, and enhanced stability (even during a tire blowout at 160 km/h, as demonstrated by CEO William Li), this sedan prioritizes peace of mind.

Pricing and Availability

Here’s the breakdown of the ET9 lineup:

  • ET9 BaaS: RMB 660,000 (~$90,450 USD)
  • ET9 Standard: RMB 788,000 (~$108,000 USD)
  • 1st Edition BaaS: RMB 690,000 (~$94,550 USD)
  • 1st Edition Standard: RMB 818,000 (~$112,000 USD)

Deliveries begin in March 2025, with the 999-unit limited edition receiving priority.

Charge Complete

The Nio ET9 blends luxury, innovation, and sustainability into a singular flagship experience. Whether it’s the 900V architecture, the SkyRide chassis, or the 5D cinema sound system, this sedan pushes boundaries in every direction.

With pricing that positions it as a serious contender against German giants like BMW and Mercedes-Benz, the ET9 isn’t just here to participate—it’s here to lead.

Will it set the tone for future EVs? March 2025 will tell.
