Hyundai’s (HYMTF) bold IONIQ 5 has just cemented its place in the history books, setting a new Guinness World Record for the greatest altitude change by an electric car.
The record-breaking feat involved the electric SUV navigating some of the most challenging terrain in the world, and in doing so, it showcased Hyundai’s ability to push the boundaries of electric mobility.
A Journey Like No Other
The journey began at Umling La, the highest drivable road on the planet, situated in India’s Leh Ladakh region, at a staggering altitude of 19,025 feet (5,799 meters). Over 14 days, the IONIQ 5 covered more than 4,900 kilometers (3,080 miles) through extreme conditions, including icy Himalayan mountain passes and the humid coastal areas of Kerala.

The electric SUV made it to its destination in Kuttanad, Kerala, located three meters below sea level, achieving a total altitude change of 19,035 feet (5,802 meters).
This remarkable accomplishment not only highlights the IONIQ 5’s capabilities but also serves as a testament to Hyundai’s dedication to innovation. The vehicle’s ability to handle diverse and harsh environments reflects its advanced engineering and cutting-edge technology.
The Journey: A Test of Endurance
The IONIQ 5 wasn’t just navigating scenic highways; it was battling the elements and proving its endurance. From freezing temperatures and steep mountain roads to the sweltering coastal heat, this EV faced it all, seamlessly adapting to the varying challenges it encountered.
Hyundai’s electric SUV was able to maintain its performance throughout, something few vehicles, electric or otherwise, could manage under such extreme conditions.
“The performance of the IONIQ 5, proven under such extreme conditions, reflects Hyundai Motor Company’s technological prowess,” said Mr. Unsoo Kim, Managing Director of Hyundai Motor India. It’s clear that the IONIQ 5 isn’t just about eco-friendliness or range—it’s about robustness and versatility, offering a real-world proof of its reliability and stamina.
IONIQ 5: A Vehicle for the Future
The IONIQ 5’s achievements are only the latest milestones for a car that’s already made a name for itself in the EV world. Powered by a 72.6 kWh battery, it’s capable of over 300 miles of driving range under the WLTP cycle.
This range, combined with the vehicle’s ability to perform in such extreme conditions, makes it a standout in the increasingly competitive electric vehicle market.
In addition to the record-breaking journey, Hyundai is rolling out an upgraded version for 2025, featuring an even larger battery (84 kWh) that pushes the driving range to an impressive 318 miles. With a starting price of $42,500, the 2025 IONIQ 5 represents incredible value for those seeking an electric SUV that combines performance, range, and cutting-edge tech.
The Bigger Picture: More Than Just a Car
The IONIQ 5 is not just about performance; it’s about Hyundai’s broader vision for the future. This record-setting journey aligns with the company’s commitment to sustainability, cutting-edge technology, and smart mobility.
Hyundai is pushing the envelope to redefine what’s possible for electric vehicles, creating a future where EVs aren’t just about getting from point A to point B—they’re about experiencing the world without limits.
With the addition of the upcoming IONIQ 9, Hyundai is clearly looking to expand its EV lineup, preparing to meet the growing demand for electric SUVs.
The IONIQ 9, a larger three-row SUV, will also be built in Georgia and offers a 335-mile range with a 110.2 kWh battery, further solidifying Hyundai’s commitment to being a leader in the electric mobility space.
Charge Complete: The Future of EVs is Here
Hyundai has proven once again that the future of electric vehicles isn’t just about smooth city streets or easy highways. The IONIQ 5’s ability to conquer the highest drivable roads and navigate through some of the most difficult terrain on earth speaks volumes about the potential of electric mobility.
With a winning combination of performance, range, and groundbreaking technology, Hyundai has set a new standard for what EVs can achieve. And as the 2025 model rolls out with even greater range and performance, it’s clear that Hyundai’s vision for the future is only just beginning.
