Historic Gas Station Becomes EV Oasis

Rivian has taken a bold step towards revolutionizing the electric vehicle (EV) charging experience by transforming an old gas station into its first Charging Outpost in the historic town of Groveland, California. Located just 24 miles from Yosemite National Park, this unique charging site is designed to provide EV drivers not only with high-speed charging but also a place to rest, relax, and recharge before continuing their adventures.

A Historic Transformation

Groveland, a town with deep roots in the California Gold Rush era, now hosts Rivian’s innovative Charging Outpost. Originally established as a blacksmith shop in 1870, the site played a crucial role in supporting the local community by creating and repairing metal tools, utensils, wagons, and other essential items. As automobiles became more prevalent in the early 20th century, the blacksmith shop transitioned into an auto repair shop and eventually a gas station. The building’s evolution reflects the changing modes of transportation over the years.

In 1933, a fire caused by a burning vehicle hitting a glass tower gas pump led to the destruction of the original structure. Despite this setback, new owners rebuilt the site, creating the two structures that exist today. From 1987 to the early 2000s, the site operated as Vern’s Groveland Gas, a service station owned by Vern Lunetta. After Vern’s retirement, the gas station fell into disrepair.

Rivian’s restoration of the site honors its rich history while transforming it into a modern EV charging hub. The building now stands as a testament to sustainable innovation, preserving its historical significance while providing a forward-thinking solution for today’s travelers.

Look at how the old gas station looked and compare that with Rivian’s makeover. It looks like a completely different place, but it’s not.

A Unique Charging Experience

The Yosemite Charging Outpost is more than just a place to power up your EV. Open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, it offers a range of amenities designed to make the charging experience enjoyable and convenient. Inside, visitors can relax in a lounge area furnished with upcycled materials, including second-hand sleeping bags and puffer coats. There’s an onsite library for book lovers, and guests can enjoy complimentary coffee and a water bottle refill station. For those feeling peckish, a “make your own” trail mix bar is available for purchase, along with Rivian merchandise.

You won’t find a fancy diner at the Charging Outpost, but that’s not what it’s intended for. It’s supposed to be a place for a quick stop to recharge your EV, recharge yourself and be on your way.

Net Zero Energy Facility

Rivian’s commitment to sustainability is evident throughout the Charging Outpost. The building is a Net Zero Energy facility, meaning that it generates as much power as it consumes, which is thanks to a partnership with US Solar. The site also features native plants that attract pollinators, and educational games that teach visitors about sustainability and the lifespan of various materials.

Charging Infrastructure

Outside, the Outpost is equipped with five DC fast chargers available 24 hours a day, ensuring Rivian owners can recharge their vehicles at any time. These chargers are part of Rivian’s Adventure Network, which aims to provide convenient and reliable charging options across the country. With over 3,500 stalls planned at 600 sites along popular routes, Rivian is making significant strides in improving the EV charging infrastructure.

Community Integration and Future Expansion

Rivian’s approach to integrating into the Groveland community has been met with enthusiasm. By engaging with local businesses and the Yosemite Chamber of Commerce, Rivian has ensured that the Charging Outpost not only serves travelers but also supports the local economy. The site includes a kids’ play area and a 24/7 restroom, making it a family-friendly stop for all visitors.

The Yosemite Charging Outpost is just the beginning. Rivian plans to open similar Charging Outposts in similar locations. This covers national parks and other high-traffic areas across the country. These locations will provide a seamless blend of charging convenience and enjoyable experiences, helping to alleviate range anxiety and promote EV adoption.

Looking Ahead

As EV sales continue to grow, the need for accessible and enjoyable charging experiences becomes more critical. Rivian’s innovative approach, combining high-speed charging with sustainability and comfort, sets a new standard for the industry. The Yosemite Charging Outpost exemplifies Rivian’s vision of creating spaces where drivers can recharge both their vehicles and themselves, making road trips more enjoyable and environmentally friendly.

In conclusion, Rivian’s Yosemite Charging Outpost represents a significant step forward in the EV charging landscape. By blending historical preservation with modern sustainability and convenience, Rivian is paving the way for a new era of electric road trips. Whether you’re an EV owner or just passing through, the Charging Outpost promises a refreshing and inspiring stop on your journey.
