2016 Nissan Leaf will come with a 30kWh battery pack option

Currently, the Nissan Leaf comes with a 24 kWh battery pack. Later this year, however, when the 2016 model year starts selling, Nissan will be offering a higher grade package that comes with a 30 kWh batter pack – that’s a 25% increase!

Although the information hasn’t been directly confirmed (or denied) by Nissan, the information was first leaked on the My Nissan Leaf forum a week ago, and InsideEVs has also received confirmation directly from 2 unidentified LEAF dealerships.

The current range of the 24kWh Nissan Leaf is EPA rated at 84 miles. If the un-useable part of the pack stays the same, than 30 kWh should be rated at 105 miles, which is right on par with the Kia Soul EV’s EPA rating.

2016 LEAF trim levels will break down as follows:

S 24kWh
SV 30kWh
SL 30kWh

Available Exterior Colors:

Forged Bronze
Brilliant Silver
Glacier White
Gun Metallic
Coulis Red
Deep Blue Pearl
Super Black
Pearl White

Available Options Packages:

charger Package is still an option on the S model and still contains the ChaDeMo port and the 6.6kW OBC. No more QC + LED Headlight Package option on the SV, that equipment appears to come as standard on the ’16 SV (not confirmed but I don’t see the option so I’m assuming the ChaDeMo port is standard, not sure about the LED headlights but I’d bet those are there as well). Premium Package with Bose + AVM is still an option on both the SV and the SL (really should be standard on the SL IMO).

In short, bigger battery, more colors, many of which will be debuting on the A36 Maxima (Coulis Red and Forged Bronze). No more MorningSky Blue which is a shame as it was a nice color on the ’15, but Deep Blue Pearl is one hell of a color IMO. It was originally an R35 GT-R exclusive color which found it’s way onto the Z34 for 2016 and will also be available on the A36 ’16 Maxima, I think most folks will love it. Anyways, hope this isn’t a repost, enjoy being in the know.

  1. HI there,

Can anyone please help me with various:

    1. CAN bus standards implmented in Nissan Leaf EV
    2. SAE standards on OBD II for Nissan Leaf EV
    3. Type of CAN buses on Nissan Leaf EV

I would be highly grateful to you

    Thanks,

  2. This is great news… as this pack should also be backwards compatible with older models. So… If you older battery gets too many cycles or is in an older LEAF that was exposed to too much heat and degraded prematurely… you can swap it to a more heat tolerant, newer model which should last longer and serve you better than the original. This makes the used cars a bargain if you find one that needs a new battery for more than 6k off the typical prices. Happy hunting.

Please correct it. not 30% but 25.
    30 – 24 = 6 (kW) increased.
    6/24 = 1/4 -> 25%.

if you comare to 30 kW battery it will be 20%. 6/30 = 1/5
