Smart has announced that the 2013 Smart ForTwo electric Drive will start at $25,000 plus delivery fees. That’s the price for the Smart ForTwo ED Coupe, making is the cheapest electric vehicle in the U.S. from a large automaker. With the $7500 tax credit factored in, the price comes in at $17,500.
If you add the $825 destination charge, the total price is $18,325 which is lower than the $21,625 for the Mitsubishi i-MiEV – keep in mind the i-Miev is a 4 passenger vehicle while the Smart ForTwo electric drive is a 2 passenger. We aren’t sure that the price difference is large enough to convince people to buy it.
Smart says it will offer two different home chargers ranging from $1300 to $1700 and it is estimating installation will cost less than $500.
Smart has not released any lease options or any details about the ForTwo Electric Drive except that a ‘companion cabriolet model will retail at $28,000’ and Smart says both models will hit the U.S. market in the Spring of 2013.
