Today at the 2013 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, in a round table interview, Nissan CEO Carlos Goshn announced that the 2013 base model Nissan Leaf would receive a price drop of $6,400! Last eyar’s base model was $35,200 and the new base-level Leaf S starts at $28,800. Carlos Goshn says the new lower price for the Nissan Leaf base model makes it the least expensive 5 seat electric vehicle currently for sale in the US, beating the Mitsubishi i-Miev price by around $300.
Granted, some of the price difference is because the Leaf S didn’t exist last year – it’s a new base model with presumably less features, but Nissan has only said there is no performance sacrifice for the S model.
Most of the price difference can be attributed to the Nissan Leaf now being built stateside at Nissan’s recently opened Smyrna, TN manufacturing facility and neighboring battery plant.
The 2013 Leaf SV will be priced from $31,820 compared to last years $35,200 and the high-end Leaf SL now starts at $34,840 down from $37,250. One addition from the 2012 model year is the new 6.6kWh charger that reduces charging times.
All 2013 Nissan Leaf prices will have a $850 destination fee.
The 2013 Nissan Leaf qualifies for the $7,500 federal income tax credit and other additional incentives in some states.
